Cheap but not cheerful: why you should buy a premium rug
For something that spends its entire life on the floor of your home, it’s incredibly tempting to buy the cheapest option available. And there is certainly no shortage of incredibly inexpensive area rugs on the market, be it in-store or online. But like with anything else, cheapest isn’t necessarily the best quality to shop for. In many cases, that $50 rug may be perfect for you, especially if you’re not expecting it to last more than a year or two. But if you’re looking for a rug that will last longer, it pays to invest a bit more in the product.
Let’s go over the trade-offs below:
Thin construction
The easiest way to reduce the price of an area rug is to reduce the materials and manufacturing time involved. Cheap rugs are often paper-thin with little to no backing to support the fibers on the face side. Less material means less cushioning when walking across the rug and can be the difference between walking on a premium piece of décor or strolling across a towel.
Poor Durability
Let’s face it: area rugs are meant to be walked on. They have to be able to withstand continuous use, especially in a high-traffic area like an entryway, kitchen, or living room. Cheaper rugs exhibit a looser tufting pattern resulting in shedding fibers everywhere whenever anything comes into contact with the surface pile. And yeah, shedding rugs are just as irritating as shedding pet hair. The lower quality also extends to the edges or “serge” thread of the rugs, easily coming undone or becoming damaged when dragging a foot or chair leg or vacumming.
Lack of Protection
Because of the lower quality materials used in their construction, cheap rugs won’t have any of the protection that a more premium rug will. UV Fade and stain resistant properties are lacking, causing that great deal of a rug to lose its luster in a short amount of time. If your rug is located in a room with regular sunlight, the effect can be accelerated.
Poor Customer Support
Hundreds of websites exist that will sell you a dirt-cheap rug from overseas at the click of a button. Unfortunately, once that rug arrives at your front door (sometimes after months of waiting) you may find yourself disappointed with the product you receive and want to return it for a refund. This is often next to impossible to secure, as these cheap rugs are churned out and mass produced with no concern for the customer experience. Because these rugs are made so cheaply, the cost of returning or exchanging them via shipping is often not worth it to the store, which puts the cost onto you, the consumer. In these situations, it just isn’t worth the cost of paying to return the rug yourself. A premium rug will come with a real warranty and established return and refund policy to protect the consumer.
